Face of the Franchise for the Dead (G-)Men Walking

Usually, it’s bad luck to go out and buy conference championship gear. Superstition says fans who do that don’t get a chance to buy anything else. Giant fans, go sick.

5. Y.A. Tittle – I don’t know how good he was, but he’s in the Hall of Fame. He makes the list because he’s in one of the best sports photographs of all time. The only ones that give it a run for its money are Muhammad Ali killing Sonny Liston, Chuck Bednarik killing Frank Gifford, and the photographs of William Clay Ford killing Detroit-area prostitutes that Matt Millen keeps in a safe deposit box near the airport.

4. Phil Simms – One of the most accurate quarterbacks in the history of the game. Also, one of the most boring and least insightful analysts out there. I’m thinking there’s a corrolary between QB accuracy and being uninteresting. Arm strength leads to aw shucks likeability. Scrambling ability leads to Mormonism or prison. This is science.

3. Bill Parcells – Won a pair of Super Bowls for Big Blue and is widely considered one of the two or three best coaches in history. The only reason he’s not higher is that he spent tours with the Jets and Cowboys and apparently drinks out of the gravy boat on Thanksgiving.

2. Michael Strahan – It’s rare when defensive ends are charismatic. It’s rare when they can form a complete sentence. Strahan is funny and really, really good. Probably the best end since pre-Redskins Bruce Smith. Plus, huge Letterman gap and no plan to Invisalign that action.

1. Lawrence Taylor – Not only was LT the Face of the Giants, he was also the ultimate 80s athlete; bizarre earrings, beaked up on blow during games, the Robocop-style maiming of Joe Theisman. The best part about this guy is that he was born in Williamsburg, VA. WILLIAMSBURG! “And over here is the blacksmith, and the livery stable, and a 6’3”, 250 lb pro athlete smoking crack out of a butter churn. It was a simpler time.”
