The Curious Case of Brett Lorenzo Favre

Written by theballcoach

This Oscar season, there’s no need to see Brad Pitt in makeup delving into a look at time and aging.  I’ll save you the 3 hours and tell you the story of Brett Favre…a story as inspiring as Benjamin Button’s without the pedophiliac undertones.  Well, unless you factor in John Madden’s creepy admiration.

Brett is a Quarterback who wowed us all over the years with his ability to (everybody now) play the game like a kid.  It always seemed like he was having fun out there.  Now his story, like Benjamin Button’s probably does in the movie, is nearing the end.  Early in his career, he played like he had been a NFL QB for years, throwing bombs and bullets all over the field.  The last few years, he started playing a bit like a scared teenager.  He had the occasional beauty of a TD, but you always knew a disaster could strike at any moment (the Giants waited for it and got it in the NFC Championship game last year).

So Brett’s third last season with the Jets showed us his year as a 2-year old.  The behind-the-scenes accounts that have come out since the end of the year from Thomas Jones and Anonymous (That’s Reggie Anonymous, a little used reserve Wide Receiver) have been Palin-esque.  He was distant, expected specialtreatment, and everyone is now just waiting for him to pick up his marbles and go home.  Well good riddance.  Although the comments have been beyond embarrassing for the team, maybe the Jets that are left will rally around it next season.  Eric Mangini was the biggest casualty of the Brett Favre Experiment, but he does deserve some blame.  Whoever takes the job next year (The Jets top choices are rumored to be Rex Ryan, Steve Spagnuolo, and Russ Grimm), they will be inheriting a mess.  But at least that mess will have a collective chip on their shoulder.  It’s amazing, but the boy in a man’s body has become an NFL villain.

That is a curious case.
